Last week, Gateway Casinos & Entertainment was reigned in as the official management company of Ontario's Southwestern casino bundle. As such, Gateway is now in control of the OLG Slots at Western Fair District.The facility's CEO is hoping this will translate to new slot machines and live table games in London's future. As such, Gateway is now in control of the OLG Slots at Western Fair District. The facility's CEO is hoping this will translate to new slot machines and live table games in London's future.
After previously winning the bid to take over day-to-day operations of all OLG slots and casino properties in north and southwest Ontario late last year, Gateway Casinos finally moved into its new southerly business role last week. One of the first to congratulate the company on its new properties was Hugh Mitchell, Chief Executive for the London raceway and slot machine parlour.
'Western Fair District would like to congratulate Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Limited on being the successful bidder of the Southwestern Ontario gaming bundle,' read a company statement, published on behalf of the CEO.
'We look forward to working with Gateway and OLG, who both have our full support as the operation transitions under the OLG's modernization plan,' the statement continued. 'We will work together to ensure the successful future of gaming in the London and Southwestern Ontario region.'
New Slot Machines & Live Tables in London?
We now know that the 'modernization plan' mentioned in that statement includes a $200 million investment in Ontario's southwest casinos. According to the LFPress, that investment could include 'more slots machines and full gaming tables at the fair site, if the city approves them'.
Mitchell was quick to condone the pending project, and its potential to boost economic development in the London area.

'This will grow employment,' he said. 'It could be a real economic driver and help tourism and recreation.
'We're pleased to be a part of it,' added the Western Fair District CEO. 'This could have a great impact on the community.'
OLG Slots at Western Fair is currently responsible for the employment of 300 staff members. Mitchell predicted that an expansion into a full casino could more than triple that to 1,000 employees, creating 700 new jobs.
The new casino – if approved – would come with an array of new slot machines, full table games, feature shows and dining experiences. It would, in the end, mimic the existing offerings at Ontario's Niagara Fallsview and Windsor casinos.
A present, Western Fair District hosts 750 OLG slots. Approval for an expanded casino would raise that number to 1,200 slot machines. The existing electronic blackjack tables would be upgraded to live dealer blackjack and poker tables.
'It would be a full-fledged casino, with tables, a pit and a dealer,' explained Mitchell, saying Gateway's plan may be to have the property turned into a casino within the next two years.
Whether London's city council will be on board with such a plan, however, is the real questions.

City On Board with London Casino?
Councilman Jesse Helmer said he'd be willing to look into it, once more information is provided . 'I'd have to see the details of what's being proposed,' he said. But his willingness extends only so far.
'I am interested in speaking to the folks at Gateway,' he said, adding that he does 'have concerns about an expansion of table games and a casino in London.' Helmer expects it to become a controversial issue that incites extensive public debate.
Gateway Casinos $200 million investment will also include proposed enhancements to OLG's existing slot machine facilities in Clinton, Dresden, Hanover, Point Edward and Woodstock.
